Battle of New Orleans is the sixth and last Historical Battle in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition launch. It depicts the eponymous battle (January 8, 1815) between the United States and the British in the last phase of the War of 1812.

Summary[]

The War of 1812 was devastating for the United States, but when the British appeared near New Orleans, hope of a major victory was kindled. As news of the British invasion spread, defenders flocked to the city. Local militia, Native Americans, and even pirates answered the call to arms.

Scenario instructions[]

Starting conditions[]

Objectives[]

Primary objectives[]

  • Prepare the defense of New Orleans.
  • Withstand the British attacks.
  • The British must not reach New Orleans.
  • Destroy the British camp.

Secondary objectives[]

Players[]

American General Icon

General Jackson, protagonist of the scenario.

Player[]

Allies[]

  • New Orleans ( United States): New Orleans has a Town Center and a few economic buildings. The British troops must not reach the American flag here or else the player will lose the scenario. In cooperative mode, the second player has this base.
  • Choctaw ( Haudenosaunee): The Choctaw settlement in the northeast has a War Hut and a few Longhouses. They will help the player in exchange for getting the Black Powder Wagon.
  • Jean Lafitte ( Pirates): Lafitte has a few tents, a Saloon, and a Privateer. If the player builds a Trading Post on the Trade Route next to his base in the southwest, Lafitte will grant him three free shipments.

Enemy[]

  • British Army ( British): The British have a fortified base in the southeast, from which several waves will come out towards the player's base. Once the player stops the final waves of Imperial Redcoats and Rockets, they can counterattack and destroy the British base, which has a Town Center, a Field Hospital, three Artillery Foundries, a few Barracks, Stables, and Outposts. Several Outposts with troops and cannons can be found on the fields outside the base. To the southwest is a Fixed Gun controlled by a British contingent, which the player can capture to prevent the British from landing southwest of New Orleans.

The map[]

The map is based on the Bayou map with a river in the west and lagoons with fishes in the north and east across the map.

Strategy[]

The player cannot build extra Town Centers in this scenario, so they must keep their starting one alive and keep producing Villagers until they have enough to create a robust economy. The Medicine shipment is particularly useful here, as it decreases Villager training cost as well as time. The player can also not build any walls or Outposts, so they must maintain a standing army in their town to defend against attackers, especially if sending forces elsewhere to complete other objectives. A timer on the right shows how long the British will be on the offensive. The player has to survive and defend their ally New Orleans until then, after which the player can go on the offensive.

In the beginning, a Market should be built and all its technologies researched. The player should then send the economic shipments which benefit Mills and Estates, and then build a few of each and fill them up, and also research their technologies. Two Settlers can be obtained from a treasure in the west. There's enough time in the start before the first enemy assault, so the player can send the army to clear the bandits and rescue the Settlers.

For the military aspect, the player's main options are Regulars (replacing Musketeers) and Volunteers (replacing Skirmishers). The player also has a choice of several types of artillery, which are excellent against the primarily infantry army of the British, the only limiting factor being their high cost. Cavalry is not a good option against the British attackers, as they primarily consist of Redcoat Musketeers. Although the initial enemy assault squads will not consist of enemy artillery, later on they will start to bring in Falconets and Rockets. To counter these, some groups of cavalry can be kept around, or Culverins can be used. Rockets outrange Culverins. The player should also keep an eye on their Choctaw allies. If their War Hut is destroyed by the British (who mostly send regiments of cavalry into their village), the Choctaw become effectively defeated.

The player should continue to get the remaining upgrades, such as troop creation speed at the Church, and defensive upgrades at the Arsenal. They can either produce a Black Powder Wagon at the Town Center for 500 wood, 350 coin, or retrieve an already existing one.[1] This wagon can be found at the east of the map, beyond an enemy force consisting of Redcoats and two Culverins.

The player can also discover the Pirate base in the west. Constructing a Trade Post for them at the site nearby grants the player control of one of their Saloons, where Jaegers, Highlanders, and Landsknechts can be hired. The Pirates themselves are not involved in the fighting.

Eventually, the player will be notified of the British taking control of a Fixed Gun at the southern edge of the map. The player can wrest control of the Fixed Gun to easily counter British warships and transports, which will arrive later. Although the Fixed Gun itself will not fire on the player's troops, the British have a large force stationed near it, with several Falconets. The player should utilize Culverins to neutralize the enemy Falconets at the clifftop before storming in to take control of the Fixed Gun.

If the player fails to or opts not to take the Fixed Gun in time, they can still hold off the British vessels using artillery. Culverins can quickly destroy the warship, while other troops at the riverbank can sink the enemy vessels and kill any troops that manage to land. The player does not have access to Docks to create their own warships.

As the game progresses, the British assaults become more frequent, larger, and more dangerous. The player should expect simultaneous attacks from all three routes into the United States side from the British camp, and should entrench a line of infantry backed up heavy artillery to hold the enemy Redcoats, Hussars, and artillery at bay. Once the Choctaw have lost a certain number of troops in the fighting, they withdraw from the battle, irrespective of the status of their village.

In the last few minutes of the timer, the British attacks become frenetic, with numerous and continuous waves of troops assaulting the American position. If the player survives this and the timer runs out, the British lose all morale and hole up in their camps, no longer fielding even a fraction of their former numbers. The player can then start the forward march, destroying British Outposts and troops, and then burn down the British camp's Town Center to cinders, to finally secure victory.

Bugs[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Since an update[When?], the Choctaw ally's optional objective is bugged such that the Black Powder Wagon retrieved from behind the British patrols does not proceed the quest to allow the Choctaw to train gunpowder units. A Black Powder Wagon trained at the Town Center, on the other hand, works for this objective.

Trivia[]

  • The Battle of New Orleans was the last major battle of the War of 1812 (although a peace agreement had already been reached in December 1814) and the one that after the American victory, boosted the political career of Andrew Jackson towards the presidency by 1829 with his new Democratic Party.
  • At the launch of the Definitive Edition, Jackson was only mentioned as "American General", because his figure is somewhat controversial for the actions he performed during his presidency (many of his actions proved divisive, garnering both fervent support and strong opposition from many in the country). His reputation has suffered since the 1970s, largely due to his anti-abolitionist views and policy of the forcible removal of Native Americans from their ancestral homelands (Trail of Tears). However, surveys of historians and scholars have ranked Jackson favorably among U.S. Presidents.
    • Battle of New Orleans does not list Jackson as a protagonist, making it the only Historical Battles campaign to not list a protagonist.
  • This Historical Battle happens two years before the Steel campaign (1817).
