Barbarossa Brawl was a single player limited-time event challenge scenario released with update 40874 of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. In the scenario, the player is challenged to replay the Holy Roman Emperor scenario and keep the initial Town Center standing as long as possible facing an endless swarm of enemies for 30 minutes, after an initial build-up phase of 5 minutes. The player receives a score based on the duration survived, which is then added to a leaderboard ranking.
Summary[]
- Build up your defenses and prepare for an intense siege
- Defend your Town Center against the enemy onslaught as long as you can
- No Walls! You must rely on Towers, Castles and the might of your army
- Increase your score with every second you hold out. Can you survive for 30 minutes?
- Compete for the top spot on the leaderboard.
Scenario instructions[]
Starting conditions[]
- Starting Age: Castle Age
- Starting resources: 3,000 food, 2,500 wood, 2,000 gold, 600 stone
- Population limit: 200
- Starting units:
- 9 Villagers
- 3 Knights
- 3 Men-at-Arms
- 1 Scout Cavalry
- 1 Mangonel
Objectives[]
You are up against impossible odds. Your primary goal is not to defeat your enemies, but rather to hold out for as long as possible. Prepare for a lengthy siege and expect your enemies to be very aggressive as soon as the first attack starts!
The longer you stay alive, the higher your score will be, but there are other ways of increasing your score as well. Check the Hints for more information!
- Survive the onslaught for as long as possible - up to 30 minutes, when the timer runs out - and try to earn as many points as you can. You will lose when your starting Town Center (marked by red flags) is destroyed.
- (secondary) Hire the Cuman soldiers for 200 gold.
Hints[]
- Your score will increase for every 5 seconds that you stay alive. The longer that you keep your starting Town Center standing, the higher your final score will be.
- Travelling to, and hiring the Cuman mercenaries (or killing them!) will give you bonus score, so it can pay off to venture outside of your starting location.
- Barbarossa has access to all Imperial Age technologies and his population is capped at 200.
- You will not be able to build any Stone Walls in this scenario, so you must rely on Towers, Castles and the might of your army to defend yourself.
Scouts[]
- Barbarossa's duchy (Red) is surrounded on all sides by hostile duchies. Barbarossa will need to survive their combined attacks to stand a chance of ruling the Holy Roman Empire. As Teutons, Barbarossa has access to an exceptional Knight-line, well-armored infantry, and strong defensive buildings.
- Three of your enemiesโBavaria (Green), Saxony (Yellow) and Lorraine (Orange)--are Teutons, much like Barbarossa's army. Expect them to utilize the same civilization strengths as you do.
- To the southeast is Austria (Blue), which is a Gothic player. Their Huskarls may prove a tough match for your defenses.
- The Bohemians (Cyan) start off rather weak initially, but if left alone will grow into a strong foe. As Slavs, expect them to utilize their cheap siege units, strong infantry, and Boyars.
- The Burgundians (Purple) are one of the weaker factions, but once they build up, beware their strong Frankish cavalry.
- To the east towards Hungary, Cuman warriors (Grey) have been spotted.
Players[]
Player[]
- Player ( Teutons): The player starts in the center of the map on a small landmass surrounded by rivers with a Castle, Monastery, and Town Center. The river crossings are protected by various Guard Towers.
Neutral[]
- Cumans ( Cumans): The Cumans' stance with the player is set as 'ally'. They are located to the far east and possess an army, but do not have a settlement, nor any Villagers. The Cuman army consists of three Cavalry Archers, seven Kipchaks, and three Heavy Cavalry Archers. Once given 200 gold as tribute, all units will join the player.
Enemies[]
This section is outdated. Please update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information. |
- Austria ( Goths): Austria is located in the southeast, where it has a small town. It is one of the weaker factions on the map, but their Relic is defended by a Castle. It is also close in proximity to the stronger teams of Bohemia and Bavaria and primarily uses Long Swordsmen and Battering Rams in battle.
- Bavaria ( Teutons): Bavaria to the south is one of the stronger factions on the map. They primarily use Knights and Scorpions in battle. Their settlement is surrounded by Stone Walls.
- Bohemia ( Slavs*): Although starting in the Castle Age, the Bohemians are initially rather weak and only have a small town to the east. Nevertheless, they grow quickly and become a strong faction as the game progresses. They will behave defensively.
- Burgundy ( Franks*): Burgundy is one of the weaker opponents on the map and is easily accessible from the initial base. They pose no real threat to the player, but their Guard Towers are scattered throughout their village. Their settlement resides just southwest of the player's village and they mainly use Crossbowmen and Elite Skirmishers in battle along with a few Knights (since Lords of the West, they will eventually upgrade them to Cavaliers). It is recommended to claim Burgundy's Relic first.
- Saxony ( Teutons): The Saxons have a fortified town to the north and are one of the stronger opponents. Despite their walls there is a hole on the south-eastern side along the river allowing an early raiding (the hole is blocked by walls in the Definitive Edition). They primarily use Crossbowmen and Teutonic Knights in battle.
- Lorraine ( Teutons): Lorraine is in the northwest. Their army is predominantly Spearmen (which they will eventually upgrade to Pikemen) and Knights along with some Mangonels. They are comparatively weak.

Trivia[]
- The in-game files term this as an "event" scenario.
- Update 40874 replaces the Mongol Raiders scenario with this scenario; however, it was stated that there will be a place for all the scenarios and leaderboards in a future update.
- Currently, all event scenarios can be accessed with the Scenario Editor, by copying its files from the dcam0 campaign folder into the editor campaign and scenario folders.
- Despite the objective to protect the starting Town Center, the player can construct additional Town Centers, unlike the Sudden Death game mode.
- Differences between the original scenario and the challenge scenario:
- The player starts with 3,000 food, 2,500 wood, 2,000 gold, 600 stone instead of 200 food, 200 wood, 500 gold, 500 stone.
- The player starts with 9 Villagers instead of 6 Villagers.
- The player starts with a Scout Cavalry instead of a Light Cavalry.
- There are additional river crossings leading into the player's base.
- The Cuman player does not have Siege Onagers, but Heavy Cavalry Archers. In addition, one Cavalry Archer is changed to a Kipchak.
- Due to the scenario being available only before the Burgundians and the Bohemians civilizations were introduced, their factions are still represented as Franks and Slavs.
