History[]
“ | The Long Walls of Athens are attributed to the architect Callicrates. The Long Walls stretched from Athens itself to the harbor at Piraeus, a distance of over 7 miles. The walls were formed of large blocks of stone stacked over 60' high and 12' thick. In the absence of powerful siege artillery, Athens was virtually impregnable except by the sea, which was defended by the famous Athenian navy. | ” |
