—Athena to Arkantos in his dream. |
Athena appears as a hero unit in some cut-screens of the Fall of the Trident campaign in Age of Mythology. She will either give valuable advice to Arkantos or to warn him of potential threats. Throughout the campaign, Athena will occasionally provide advice to the player. If a campaign hero on the player's side faints, she will be heard saying, "A hero has fallen." Her only other appearance is in the Scenario Editor. Although she has an attack stat, she is unable to deal damage.
Athena also appears in the tutorial as the instructor for the game. She repeatedly guides the player through learning how to play the game, often with a kind mentor tone to her voice, as fitting with Athena's frequent role as a mentor figure to heroes throughout Greek mythology. She also takes this tutorial instructor role in the first main campaign scenario Omens, introducing new concepts like the Armory. However, after Omens, she stops introducing the concepts of the game to the player and only notifies the player if a hero falls.

- Athena is one of four revivable heroes that cannot fight. The others are Skult, the Folstag Flag Bearer, and the Golden Fleece. The latter is a semi-hero.
- Of all heroes and semi-heroes, there are ten in total who cannot fight. The others are the Theocrat/Krios, Hippocrates, Emperor Yao, Kastor (with staff), and the Regent.
