The Atabeg is a unique unit of the Ayyubids in Age of Empires IV: The Sultans Ascend. It can be garrisoned into any military production building to grant +20% hit points to newly trained units.
Gameplay[]
The Atabeg is initially spawned at the House of Wisdom when advancing to the next age with the Advisors branch of the Trade Wing. This grants 3, 5, and 7 Atabegs in the Feudal, Castle, and Imperial (or Post-Imperial) Ages respectively. Once the Atabeg is garrisoned inside a building, it cannot be ungarrisoned. If the building is destroyed, the player can train an Atabeg at the House of Wisdom up to the number of Atabegs initially spawned.
Ability[]
- Camel Unease (passive): Enemy horse-riding cavalry within a 5-tile radius deal 20% less damage.
- Atabeg Supervision (passive): Garrison inside of a military production building to grant +20% hit points to newly trained units.

Advisors[]
Using the Advisors branch of House of Wisdom to advance to the next Age can result in a different number of Atabegs.
Age change | Food cost | Gold cost | Number | Average cost |
---|---|---|---|---|
→ | 400 | 200 | 3 | 133 food, 66 gold |
→ | 1,200 | 600 | 5 | 240 food, 120 gold |

2,400 | 1,200 | 7 | 342.9 food, 171.4 gold |
When taken in isolation, it can be observed that the cost per Atabeg is increasing by Age, but so are the number of production buildings which produce tankier units.
Dialogue lines[]
Atabegs use the Male Abbasid Villager voice lines
Changelog[]
- Originally, Atabegs took up 1 population. With patch 11.1.1201, they take 0 population.
Trivia[]
- Atabeg is a nobiliary title of Turkic origin used among others in the Seljuk Empire and in Mamluk Egypt.
- Camel Traders appear in the Content Editor in the Malians section. They reappear in The Sultans Ascend as Ayyubid Atabegs, although erroneously, since they still have uncharacteristic Malian attire, and can be female despite having male-only voice lines and being historically only male.
