Ascent of Egypt (named Tutorial Campaign: Ascent of Egypt in the Definitive Edition, Ascent of Egypt Learning Campaign in Age of Empires) is the first campaign of Age of Empires. It is primarily based on the history of the establishment of the Old Kingdom in Ancient Egypt.

This campaign is designed to teach new players how to play Age of Empires. The early scenarios teach the players fundamentals of the game. As the campaign progresses, it teaches players more advanced strategies such as converting, trading, and even building a Wonder.

The Ascent of Egypt tutorial campaign was officially brought to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Return of Rome in update 93001. The campaign is based primarily on the Definitive Edition version.

  • Ascent of Egypt is the earliest-set official campaign in the entire series. The first three scenarios take place entirely in the Stone Age.
  • In the Definitive Edition and Return of Rome versions, the Bronze Age is reached in scenario 7 (Trade), and the last two scenarios can be advanced to the Iron Age. In the original game, the Iron Age can be researched in every scenario from 6 (Farming) onwards, but the starting age is more varied: the Tool Age from 6, Bronze Age from 8 (Crusade), and then back to the Stone Age in 12 (Siege in Canaan).
  • There are no enemy players in scenarios 1 (Hunting), 2 (Foraging), and 4 (Dawn of a New Age).
  • Enemy players are only able to create new units in scenarios 6 (Farming), 7 (Trade), 10 (Naval Battle), 11 (A Wonder of the World), and, since the Definitive Edition, 12 (Siege in Canaan).
