This article is about the scenario in Age of Empires III. For other uses, see Artillery.

Your army is about to engage an enemy that has a large force of infantry units. Your mission is to avoid as many casualties as possible-employ the artillery units that are best suited for this confrontation.
—First lines spoken in the scenario.

Artillery is the tenth and last scenario of The Art of War in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. In this scenario, the player learns how to handle artillery units and how to use them against waves of enemy infantry, other artillery units, and buildings.

Video instruction[]

Cannon Types and Artillery Tactics

Artillery is one of the most powerful weapons of this era. Cannons are mainly adept at demolishing large groups of infantry and buildings. However, they take time to reload and are very vulnerable to melee attacks.

Artillery pieces must unlimber before they can fire. While in firing mode, their movement slows to a crawl. However, you can overcome this weakness by preparing them before a conflict. Once a battle is over, task your cannons to limber again so that they can move around more easily.

Like other units, each type of artillery plays a different role. The Falconet specializes in attacking infantry, the lighter Culverin is best used against other artillery, and the extremely heavy Mortar excels at demolishing buildings from a safe distance.

Mastering the use of artillery will let you dominate the battlefield as Napoleon did. Now, let us see if you can support your allies with your newfound knowledge of cannons.

Medals[]

Gold: Complete the scenario with less than 9 units lost.
Silver: Complete the scenario with less than 15 units lost.
Bronze: Complete the scenario with less than 21 units lost.

The map[]

The map is based on the Siberia map. It features three areas from which waves of enemies are approaching. The player should focus on micromanaging artillery units to aid the ally's troops and avoiding the loss of as many allied troops as possible to aim for the gold medal.

Strategy[]

In this scenario, the player has a handful of artillery units, such as Falconets, Culverins, and Mortars, and must learn to use them properly to win the scenario. The player must use Falconets to wipe out waves of enemy infantry, then Culverins to destroy the enemy Falconets, and finally Mortars to destroy the enemy Fort. After this, the scenario is won. In order to achieve a medal, the player must try to protect artillery units from cavalry units and let them soak ranged damage from enemy infantry.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only scenario in Age of Empires III aside from the Chuvash Cape scenario where the player plays as the Russians.
  • There have been no military conflicts between Russia and the Dutch in this historical period (except when the Dutch were part of France's satellite states during The Napoleonic Wars).
