Set this fort ablaze! If the Greeks will not face us on the open sea, we shall burn them out.
—Closing to the fort in Divine Salamis

Artemisia is a naval hero in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Chronicles: Battle for Greece, and has a unique model. As a hero, she cannot be converted and can regenerate health. As a Trireme, the ship has a charged attack.

Campaign appearances[]

Battle for Greece logo Battle for Greece[]

  • The Hot Gates: After the Persian navy is successfully withheld at the Battle of Artemisium, a large attack force led by Artemisia arrives to break the Athenian blockade.
  • Divine Salamis: Artemisia is stationed at the port of Piraeus, occupied by the Persians. After the Athenians break the blockade, she will prepare and launch a counterattack. If defeated, she will withdraw back to the east.

While not appearing personally, Artemisia is an ally to Artaphernes and Datis in several scenarios. In Chasing Smoke, she asks them to retrieve a prized horse, in exchange for her assistance in pursuing the Ionians. In Death to Traitors, her forces will battle the Greek fleet under Dionysius at Lade and later lay siege and deploy sappers at Miletus. In Earth and Water, she will ask Datis to break the gates of the central island belonging to Paros, from which she will assist the Persian invasion of the Cyclades. She also appears as the leader of the Persian defensive army at Cyprus in Across the Wine-Dark Sea, but again does not make a personal appearance.

History[]

Artemisia I of Caria was a Carian-Greek tyrant of the city-state of Halicarnassus in Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). A loyal satrap ('vassal') of the Achaemenid Emperor Xerxes I, she fought on his behalf against independent Greek city-states during the Ionian Revolt and the second Persian invasion of Greece. She personally commanded ships at the naval battles of Artemisium and Salamis in 480 BC, where she was noted for being among the bravest of Xerxes' commanders. After the latter battle, Artemisia reportedly discovered the body of Ariamenes, Xerxes' brother, floating in the wreckage, and later convinced him to return to Persia, leaving command of the war to his generals. Despite fighting on the Persian side, Artemisia was widely praised in the Greek world for her courage and loyalty. A later ruler of Caria, Artemisia II, was named after her. It was this Artemisia who built the famous Mausoleum of Halicarnassus (represented in Age of Mythology as the Wonder for Hades).

Trivia[]

  • The ship's sail has a figure of a Greek Sphinx.
