Warships hitpoints increased.
—In-game description

Armor Plating is a technology in Age of Empires III that can be researched at the Dock once the Colonial Age is reached. Once researched, it increases the hit points of warships by 50%.

Strategy

This technology is extremely useful as most warships have a relatively low amount of hitpoints and are rather costly to produce. This allows them to last longer in fights and be easier to return to the dock for automatic repair.

However, it is relatively costly in gold, especially compared to the cost of a Frigate. Statistically to get the equivalent value of 2000HP, it would require a Privateer shipment or an abnormally large amount of Caravels, or alternatively multiple Galleons to make the upgrade be cost effective. Thus is not likely to be efficient before the first Frigate is produced

Shipping the British Card TEAM Cheap Docks halves the cost of this card, but the card itself is unlikely to be efficient due to the opportunity cost of a Shipment.

The AI never research this technology, giving the player an edge on naval combat.
