Myth unit. Can attack with a blob of acid that instantly kills most opponents. Good against human soldiers.
—In-game description

Argus (plural: Argi) is a Mythic Age myth unit available to the Atlanteans in Age of Mythology: The Titans through worshipping Atlas.

Special ability[]

  • Acidic Spray (Charged): The Argus spews a pool of acid at enemy units, dealing 5 Divine Attack divine damage per second (3× vs. myth units, 0.1× vs. heroes), over 4 seconds, in a radius of 3.5 from a range of 4, and a burst of 50 Divine Attack divine at the end along with mentioned multipliers. The damage over time only applies to units, while the burst applies to buildings as well. Recharge time: 25 seconds.*

Further statistics[]

Strategy[]

In combat Argi are fairly powerful melee units with an attack bonus against other myth units and very high armor and hit points. Argi can easily defeat most human soldiers; however, their damage output is on the low side compared to other Mythic Age myth units. To make up for this, they have a special attack in which they can regurgitate green acid in a pool which serves as area denial, damaging any enemy units which step in it.

While an Argus is relatively resilient, it is a large myth unit, making it possible to attack it from several angles and get mobbed down. The acid pool can mitigate this effect, but it still is recommended to bring several to deny larger areas, and support them with other units which can keep the pressure off.

In combat they are fairly powerful melee units with an attack bonus against other myth units and high armor. Argi can easily defeat most human soldiers, but in terms of damage output they are fairly weak compared to other Mythic Age myth units. To make up for this, they have a special attack in which they can regurgitate green acid which deals instant death to all units other than Heroes and Titans.

Like other myth units with an instant kill attack, they should be micro-managed to target the strongest units in an opponents army. Unlike other Mythic Age myth units with an instant kill attack, Argus has to get up-close to its target. This leaves it at a disadvantage if their targets can keep their distance and even take it out with a ranged attack. To make matters worse, the Argus is a large myth unit, meaning it can be attacked from several angles and killed rather quickly if overwhelmed due to its rather low HP. As Atlas is a defensive God, it is recommended to use Argus defensively and have it protect important buildings from Siege Weapons or other myth units (especially Scarabs). As with all myth units, they are weak against Heroes.

Apart from being used in micro against myth units, especially Colossi and Mountain Giants, one may take advantage of the great Line of Sight of a fully-upgraded Argus for reconnaissance. In maps with many chokepoints, such as Jotunheim or Marsh, this can be very beneficent, combined with a turtling strategy, based on Atlas' tougher structures; they may also act as a "spotter" for Cheiroballistae and Arci. Not only that, but they can assist in ambushes, where the Argi target the strongest units in an attacking group, retreat and let other units in an army to fight the rest (until the ability recharges, if they are close to death).

In higher-level games, Atlantean players will often place their Citizens near garrison-able buildings, which makes raiding their economy very difficult. The Argus and other instant-kill myth units are effective at raiding Citizens in this situation because the instant-hit attack gives Citizens no time to garrison.

Changelog[]

The Titans[]

  • Argi have 360 hit points and deal 20 Hack Attack hack damage. Their special attack has a range of 2 and instantly kills the targeted unit, but cannot be used against Heroes.
  • Argi have 18 Line of Sight, cost 5 population space, and take 30 seconds to train. Their ability takes 18 seconds to recharge.

Tale of the Dragon[]

  • With patch 2.0, Argi take 20 seconds to train.
  • With patch 2.7, Argi have 550 hit points, and their special attack has a range of 3.

Retold[]

  • Argi have 760 hit points and deal 30 Hack Attack hack damage. Their ability takes 25 seconds to recharge.
  • Argi have 16 Line of Sight and cost 4 population space
  • Argi have a new special attack where they spray an acid pool which instead rapidly and repeatedly damages any enemy units who step on the acid pool. It can now be used against heroes, but it deals little damage to them. The special attack deals 10 Divine Attack divine damage per second (2× vs. myth units, 0.1× vs. heroes) over 8 seconds, from a range of 5, in an area of radius 4, with an intended but bugged burst attack at the end.
  • Argi gain +100% hit points, +100% attack, and +20% speed in the Wonder Age.
  • With update 17.27932, the special attack deals 5 Divine Attack divine damage per second (3× vs. myth units, 0.1× vs. heroes) over 6 seconds, from a range of 4, in an area of radius 3.5, with a burst of 50 Divine Attack divine attack (same multipliers as mentioned) at the end.
  • With update 17.43876, Argi deal 40 Hack Attack hack damage and their special attack' acid pool lasts 4 seconds (burst time adjusted accordingly).

Immortal Pillars[]

Mythology[]

Scientific name -- Amoeba maxima
Size -- variable
Diet -- scenic vistas, dissolved mortal flesh

Argus is an amorphous creature covered with bulbous eyes. When threatened, the Argus forcefully excretes a sticky blob of acid from its many specialized tear ducts. Creatures trapped in this acid have little hope of survival. Argus also uses this acid to partially pre-digest its food.

Hera's Argus served her faithfully until the god Hermes slew him. Zeus had commanded Hermes to trick Argus and slay him so that the philandering god could recapture one of his lovers, Io, from his jealous wife. Hera honored Argus' sacrifice by placing his eyes on the tail of her sacred peacock. Io, who had endured all this in the form of a pure white cow, was saved only to plunge into what is now called the Ionian Sea.
