The Apep is an Egyptian myth unit that was cut from Age of Mythology but was later readded with the Tale of the Dragon expansion.
Although they were added with Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon, the Apep is hidden, to re-enable the Apep for Scenario Editor usage, the player must look for and remove the <flag>NotPlayerPlaceable</flag> under its definition in the Proto XML file. In Retold, they were removed from the game.

Trivia[]
- This unit represents the great serpent Apep (also known as Apophis), an ancient deity of chaos, who devoured souls and attacked Ra every night, who traveled west to bring sunrise.
- The unit has legs which is a feature Apep lacks making it look more like the snake god Nehebkau or a lindworm.
- Apep has the same stats as the Sphinx.
- The Apep was originally removed because Ensemble's animators found it hard to re-visualize in a good enough way, and was likely replaced by the Petsuchos.
