—Common in-game description for all Animals of Set in Retold |
Animals of Set are creatures under the influence of the Egyptian major god Set in Age of Mythology. They come in two types.
In the original game, they are animals and not myth units, but heroes also deal bonus damage against them, although to a smaller extent. They can resist certain myth unit abilities (like the Medusa's petrification) as well as god powers due to being neither human units nor myth units. As animals, enemy villagers attack them with bows and can kill them relatively easily in groups. Neither can be healed by Priests or by any other source of healing.
In Retold, all Animals of Set are also classified as myth units. No hero has attack multipliers specifically against Animals of Set. Furthermore, Animals of Set can now be healed, making them last longer in combat.
Both have lesser food, hit points, and attack compared to their wild counterparts. In the Archaic Age, all of them (both summoned Baboons of Set and any converted animals) have ×0.1 the attack compared to their wild versions, which increases back once the player reaches the Classical Age.
Designated Animals of Set[]
First, there are eight designated animals that have 'of Set' added to their names: the Ape of Set, Gazelle of Set, Hyena of Set, Giraffe of Set, Crocodile of Set, Hippopotamus of Set, Rhinoceros of Set, and Elephant of Set. There are a few differences between the Animals of Set and their regular Mother Nature or converted counterparts. They yield only 50-60% of the food that a regular animal does, resulting in less food than even converted animals. The Gazelle, Giraffe and Hyena of Set have all had their speeds changed to 4.0.
The Set player obtains these special animals in one of two ways. First, they are granted to the Set player as bonus units, and second, they can also be summoned by the Pharaoh.
Bonus Animals of Set[]
At the start of each Age, bonus units appear at the Set player's Temple, as follows:
Age | Animals | |
---|---|---|
Archaic Age | 1 Baboon of Set (appears at the start of the game at the player's Town Center) | |
Classical Age | 3 Gazelles of Set | 2 Hyenas of Set |
Heroic Age | 3 Giraffes of Set | 2 Crocodiles of Set |
Mythic Age | 3 Rhinos of Set | 2 Hippopotamuses of Set |
Summoned Animals of Set[]
The following animals can be summoned by the Pharaoh:
- Archaic Age: Baboon of Set
- Classical Age: Gazelle of Set, Hyena of Set
- Heroic Age: Giraffe of Set, Crocodile of Set
- Mythic Age: Hippopotamus of Set, Rhinoceros of Set, Elephant of Set
Animals of Set cost only favor, leaving the player's other resources for more important uses. Also, summoning only takes a few seconds. Note that the Pharaoh is free to move, empower buildings and attack while he is summoning animals. Elephants of Set were introduced in Retold.
Unlike other trainable units, the production of Animals of Set by the Pharaoh cannot be autoqueued.
Converted animals[]
In addition, Set's Priests are able to convert any huntable animal in the game, except for Ducks and Chickens. Normally, conversion times range from 18 seconds for deer to 1 minute for a Rhinoceros, though on some maps conversion takes longer. All converted animals yield 75% of the food that the original Mother Nature animal yields.
Converting animals leaves the player's Laborers with less to hunt, leaving the player with a dilemma. To avoid this, it is sometimes wise to convert animals in enemy territory, as the player will be gaining units while at the same time removing his foe's food sources. Using multiple Priests to convert a single animal is inefficient, as the conversion time is only marginally reduced.
Even if the converted animal dies close to an enemy base, the reduction in food works in the Set player's favor, in addition to food decay until the enemy player is able to start harvesting.
The player must ensure they have sufficient population space when trying to convert a wild animal, as otherwise the conversion will continue indefinitely without any indication that the player does not have enough population space.

Converted animals did not have the suffix "of Set" in their names before Retold. The following list omits convertible animals which can also be summoned by the Pharaoh.
