“ | Akan warrior firing a powerful old musket. | ” |
—In-game description |
The Akan Ankobia is a ranged infantry native warrior in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - The African Royals that can be trained at a Trading Post built on an Akan settlement.
Overview[]
The Akan Ankobia is a ranged heavy infantry unit similar to the Musketeer. It has a weaker ranged attack compared to any regular Musketeer-type units, but its ranged attack has short-range splash damage, which can be useful when fighting dense formations of infantry.
The Hausa can train them from the War Camp when the Gaananci Home City card is sent. Since Maigadis require influences to train, Hausa can utilize Akan Ankobias to make up for their weaknesses of lacking traditional Musketeer-type units.

- For African civilizations, native warriors are upgraded automatically and for free.
Civilization differences[]
- The Dutch can train Akan Ankobias at Native Embassies through the "Belanda Hitam" Home City Card, which also upgrades them to Elite and Champion, and increases their training limit by 18.
- The Hausa can get Akan Ankobias if they choose the Akan Alliance to age up to the Fortress Age, Industrial Age, or Imperial Age, which ships 6, 8, and 16 Akan Ankobias respectively. This also allows them to be trained at Palaces and Native Embassies. They also can train them at War Camps through the "Gaananci" card, which replaces their influence cost for food and coin, and removes their training limit in exchange for 1 population cost. Additionally, Hausa Akan Ankobias can generate 1.8 influence per minute after sending the "Hegemony" card.
Revolutions[]
- Haiti can get Akan Ankobias through the "African Roots" Home City Card, in the pool of random West Africa units shipped. It also enables them to ally with the Akan at the Native Embassy, and allows Akan Ankobias use Stealth mode.
- Indonesia has the "Belanda Hitam" card with the same effect as described above.

Trivia[]
- The Akan Ankobia, Haudenosaunee Tomahawk, Maya Holcan Javelineer, Somali Issa Warrior, and Yoruba Oyo Legionary are the only native warrior units that are tagged as musket infantry.
History[]
“ | The ankobia were a company of asafo musketmen who resided in the Ashanti capital as royal guards and police. The Ashanti were among the first in the region to form a proficient dedicated musketeer corps, and – wisely – tended to fire their muskets from the hip, a tactic that precluded extensive damage from firearm malfunctions common at the time. | ” |
