Trivia[]
- Concepts of an Aztec themed expansion for Age of Mythology have existed since the game itself. The Aztecs have most notably been featured as a distinct pantheon in several mods such as:
- Age of Mythology: The Natives for Age of Mythology: The Titans which was developed by Warrior Mario, who later become an official developer at Forgotten Empires. The mod itself was only released in an open alpha state on Voobly and Github, and was ultimately abandoned by 2015.
- AlanWake's Aztec Mod, the first publicly released Aztecs mod that was finished. Much of the content was based upon the Aztecs from Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs.
- The Return of the Gods is the most famous incarnation of the concept.
- The expansion name references obsidian mirrors called tezcatl, used by the Nahua peoples for divination, and is associated with Tezcatlipoca, the "Smoking Mirror" god of the night.[3][4]
