Secure your domain, command legendary monsters, and call upon the power of the gods to crush your enemies - or band together with friends to defeat the Arena of the Gods.

Age of Mythology: Retold is the remastered version of Age of Mythology in the style of a Definitive Edition, featuring significant changes to the core mechanics. Available via Steam on Windows, on Xbox, and on the Xbox Game Pass of both platforms, it was revealed on October 25, 2022 and was released on September 4, 2024, 5 PM UTC.[1][2] Owners of the game's pre-purchased Premium Edition were able to play from 12 AM on August 28, 2024, UTC. The early access was released as update 17.18697.

The expansion Immortal Pillars was revealed at Tokyo Game Show on September 26, 2024.[3] This expansion, which reintroduces the reworked Chinese civilization, was released on March 4, 2025.

Pre-release information[]

The game will be made using Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition's version of the Bang Engine. All units and animations will be completely redone (with Gaia as an obvious example). Its soundtrack will be a new fully symphonic version, it will be given lot of tweaks and modernisations, and will contain more options for players. It will feature and improve all the playable content up to and including the Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon expansion.[4]

On January 31, 2024, it was announced that a sneak peak will be shown in the "New Year, New Age" livestream scheduled on February 23, 2024, where a few myth units will be unveiled.[5]

On February 23, 2024, the "New Year, New Age" livestream showcased the Medusa, Pegasus, and Cerberus, and announced a release date of 2024. The Steam page and all showcased content and released text omit any mention of the Chinese civilization, as well as lack portrayal of any units (such as Bogsveigir or Khopesh Swordsman) or any other content added in the Extended Edition.

On June 10, 2024, it was confirmed that the Chinese would be added in the first expansion to the game,[6] due for release in 2024.[7] The second expansion, due for release in 2025, was described simply as an additional new pantheon.

On July 9, 2024, a closed beta was announced for only those customers who have pre-purchased the Premium Edition of the game on Steam. The closed beta was declared to start at 17:00 UTC on Friday, July 12th and to last until 6:59 UTC on Sunday, July 14th.[8]

On July 23, 2024, it was announced that Online Stress tests featuring only multiplayer will be held for all Steam players (whether they have pre-ordered the game or not) who register for and are accepted for the stress test open beta, from Friday 26, July to Sunday 28, July for three hours (12:30 UTC to 15:30 UTC) each day.[9]

Trivia[]

  • During development, the game was codenamed "Athens".
  • Due to widespread criticism of the deity portraits and voice acting in the beta version of Retold by players, both were extensively redone for the final release of the game. All the deity portraits were redone with higher quality and more consistency by Atomhawk.[15] Arkantos' new voice lines were scrapped and another voice actor, Chris Okawa, was brought in to revoice the lines.
    • However, concerns regarding the Legacy Deity Portrait Pack remain unresolved. Notably, Hades' pre-finalized portrait is used instead of the finalized one, Thoth's headpiece appears to be levitating, and Loki's outfit lacks details.
