On May 8, 2014, Age of Mythology: Extended Edition was released on Steam as the HD Edition version of Age of Mythology. It features improved graphics, water, lighting, along with day/night cycles, Treaty game mode, Steam achievements, and mod workshop.
Compared to the previous releases, the Extended Edition received average reviews due to lag, bad optimization, and bugs. It is, however, reviewed better by customers on Steam, receiving around 9/10. Even so, many among the player-base do not think well of the re-release, and as such a petition was made by Nakamura, one of the former balancers of Tale of the Dragon, to fix the various issues with the game.
On 19 September 2015, a new expansion for the Extended Edition, labeled Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon, was announced and planned to be released in January 2016, featuring Chinese as a civilization, new random maps, and a new campaign. It was released on 28 January 2016.
The cover art on its Steam store page was greyed out on September 5, 2024, signaling its upcoming retirement post the release of Age of Mythology: Retold.
