Different user groups have access to specific editing features of the Age of Empires Series Wiki. While any user can perform most functions on the site, including reading and editing, users possessing additional user rights have access to additional tools that allow them to access to features of the wiki which are not available to others, perform maintenance tasks, and revert vandalism with greater ease.
Users with such rights, while being trusted members of the community, are not any better or more important than anyone else. They do not hold an extra vote, or veto power, and their votes are weighted equally with that of users that do not have added rights. Any member of the community is eligible to apply for these rights.
Most user rights can be granted only by Bureaucrats and Fandom Staff Members. Granting additional rights are accomplished through community consensus. Anyone may nominate a user to request additional rights to the user. A guide for requesting these rights can be found at Project:Requests for permissions. For more information on user rights, please see Special:ListGroupRights and Community Central help page.

Staff members
- Bots
- Rollback
- Threadmoderator (not independent - given with both rollback and content-moderator rights)
- Content-moderator
- Administrator
- Bureaucrat
User right | Key role | Subset of |
---|---|---|
Rollback editor | Quickly revert vandalism | Content moderator |
Thread moderator | Edit and delete comments | Administrator |
Content moderator | Edit and delete pages | Administrator |
Administrator | Edit core functioning of the wiki | Bureaucrat |
Bureaucrat | Change user rights | Fandom staff members |
- Except when promoting administrators to bureaucrats, the lower user right is supposed to be removed, since it is superfluous. For example, administrators do not need content-moderator rights since these rights are included in their role by default.
Expiry of rights
All local rights including bots are not supposed to expire by default when given, that is, everyone is appointed forever by default. When a user is inactive for over three (1.5 for bots) years, the user right is said to "expire" and should be taken away. Not taking away rights does not do any good or harm in most cases, since they become inactive forever. There is some chance that these users return and may not be updated with evolving standards. This is especially important for bots, the activity of which are hidden by default.
If any inactive staff member wishes to return, they can show a healthy activity of 15 days in a span of 30 days, after which they are given a user right one level below their previous rights. After having a healthy activity of another 15 days in the next 30 days, they can reclaim their previous rights. Note that reclaiming the previous level of rights does not require re-election.
Since bureaucrat rights cannot be taken away directly, an active bureaucrat needs to contact a Fandom staff member to remove the rights of an inactive bureaucrat.
