Age of Empires is a series of historical real-time strategy video games originally developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Studios. The first game, Age of Empires, was released in 1997 and the series has spanned five major titles and several spin-offs, selling over 20 million copies to date.

All main series titles were originally PC-exclusive and were originally developed by Ensemble Studios until its closure in 2009. Age of Empires IV was developed by Relic Entertainment.

On January 31, 2023, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition was ported to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, with crossplay (cross-platform play) between PC and Xbox players. On August 22, 2023, Age of Empires IV was also ported to the same Xbox consoles, albeit without crossplay. On March 12, 2024, with update 10.0.576, it received crossplay between PC and Xbox versions.
Re-releases[]
Age of Empires II: HD Edition was developed by Hidden Path Entertainment. All following remasters and expansion packs were developed by SkyBox Labs, with the assistance of Forgotten Empires. For the Definitive Edition remasters, Forgotten Empires have handled development with studios Tantalus Media and Wicked Witch.
