Age of Chivalry: Hegemony is a fanmade total conversion mod for Age of Empires II: The Conquerors, first released on March 16, 2008, with the last update in 2017. It can be downloaded and played for free.
The mod replaces all civilizations with others based on specific states from mostly Central Europe in the Late Middle Ages (12th-15th centuries), often with completely unique buildings, units, and technologies. Several other features are also changed to make them relevant to this time and area.
The credited modders are numerous, mostly regulars at the Age of Kings Heaven modding boards. Later, some of them founded Forgotten Empires and created the original fan mod version of the The Forgotten expansion, incorporating some of their ideas and work done for Hegemony into it.[Citation needed] As a result, Hegemony can be considered a forerunner to the revival of the franchise in the 2010s.
Main features[]
- Ages renamed to 12th Century (from Dark Age), 13th Century (Feudal Age), 14th Century (Castle Age), and 15th Century (Imperial Age), with game mechanics changed to be accurate to the new time setting. As a result, Archer units are available from the first age, and Castles and Siege Weapons from the second age.
- Mercenary units including Genoese Crossbowmen, Florentine Gunners, and English Longbowmen.
- Three types of state (civilizations): Early-game Communal factions, mid-game Militia/Spearman-based Urban societies, and heavy Infantry and Cavalry-based Noble principalities.
- 26 playable countries: Austria, Bavaria, Bohemia, Brandenburg, Brittany, Burgundy, Denmark, England, Flanders, Florence, France, Friesland, Genoa, Guelders, Helvetia, Hungary, Liège, Milan, Naples, the Papal States, Poland, Savoy, Saxony, Scotland, Venice, and Wales.
- Two or three different paths to choose for every state, based on Policy Decisions.
- New buildings, technologies, and units, some of them general and others unique to a country.
- Reworked History section and campaigns from the base game, most notably Barbarossa.
- A new campaign of 9 scenarios based on the battle of Bouvines, the Barons' War, the conquest of West Friesland, the battle of Kortrijk, the start of the Hundred Years War, the Chioggia War, the siege of Maastricht, the battle of Vitkov Hill, and the siege of Neuss.
- Auto-installer.
Similarities to later expansions[]
- The appearance of Flanders' Scaerwetter (itself edited from the Pikeman) was reused for the Heavy Pikeman in the mod version preceding The Forgotten. His weapon is a Goedendag, a mix of club and spear developed by Flemish rebels in the early 14th century to fight French heavy cavalry.
- Similarly, the appearance of the Genoese Crossbowman in the mod version, edited from the Hand Cannoneer, was also first made for the Genoese Crossbowman in this mod.
- The Italian Wonder, Quimper Cathedral, and Fortress were all developed originally for this mod (as the Wonder equivalent of Genoa, Brittany, and Flanders, respectively).
- The mod's version of the Swiss Pikeman has a range of one, like the Kamayuk introduced in The Forgotten.
- The Cumans' unique unit, the Kipchak, is very similar to the Cuman Auxiliary, being a weak but fast cavalry archer that can shoot several arrows at once. As the Cumans are not a playable faction and the Auxiliary is an implied mercenary (only available to Austria, Hungary, and Naples), it can also be considered a forerunner of the Cuman Mercenaries unique technology.
- Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Lords of the West introduces the Sicilians (which cover Naples) and the Burgundians (covering at least Burgundy, Flanders, Friesland, Guelders and Liege) as new civilizations. The Burgundians' two unique units are the Coustillier, which is the strongest generic Stable unit in Hegemony, and the Flemish Militia, which is armed with the same weapon as the Scaerwetter. Similar to the current Burgundian Wonder (Brussels Town Hall), the Monument used is the Leuven Town Hall. The Barons' War is also portrayed in the first scenario of the Edward Longshanks campaign.
- Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Dawn of the Dukes introduces the Poles and Bohemians. In both games, the Bohemians have a unique War Wagon (Hussite Wagon) and a unique Bombard Cannon (Houfnice). The Bohemian Castle and the mod's Monument are both based on Karlštejn Castle. The Wavel Cathedral is the basis of the Polish Wonder in both the mod and Dawn of the Dukes. Additionally, the Crusader Knight is virtually identical looking to the Teutonic Order's Ritterbruder in Hegemony. The Battle of Vitkov Hill is also portrayed in the fourth scenario of the Jan Zizka campaign.
