Mythology[]
| “ | Ōkuninushi, whose name means "Master of the Land," is a major earth kami in Japan. He is revered as the god of protection, agriculture, and medicine. Many of his myths highlight his compassionate nature, especially in contrast to his cruel eighty older brothers. One well-known tale is that of the flayed rabbit. In the story, his brothers advised a flayed rabbit to bathe in the salty ocean to heal its wounds. As the rabbit suffered in the saltwater, Ōkuninushi approached and suggested that it bathe in the fresh water of a nearby river instead. His kindness toward the rabbit earned him the hand of the beautiful Yakami of Inaba. Later, Ōkuninushi fell in love with another woman, Suseri, a princess and the daughter of the storm god Susanoo. The two married and eventually fled from Susanoo's house. | ” |
