Dans Age of Mythology, en plus de choisir votre civilisation parmi les Grecs, les Égyptiens, les Scandinaves, les Atlantéens et les Chinois, vous devez également choisir un dieu majeur. Il y en a 3 par civilisation, soit 9 dans le jeu de base, puis 3 par extension, pour un total de 12 dieux majeurs.

Avant de lancer une partie, le joueur doit donc choisir une civilisation puis un dieu majeur, qui lui apportera des avantages spécifiques et différents des autres dieux majeurs de sa civilisation.

The Egyptian major gods are Ra, the god of sun, Isis, the mother god of protection, and Set, the god of desert and chaos. Ra's specialty lies in Priests and empowering. Isis focuses on technology and protection. Set's field of interests include using wild animals as allies and speed.

The Norse major gods are Odin, the king of the gods and god of war, Thor, the god of thunder, and Loki, the trickster god. Odin focuses on warriors and hunters, while Thor specializes in Dwarves and smithing and Loki on speed and mobility.
